II. Grading What I will focus for grading: (1) documentation of sources for any publications, information and data you used to back up your argument (no wikipedia; see my wikipedia penalty in the syllabus). This includes information on the websiteyou should cite the URL and accessed date; (2) demonstration of systematic research (objective>subjective, good data or information gathering, addressing alternative hypothesis etc) and detailed documentation about your methodology, and (3) good and clear writing (follow this guideline re: the structure of paper, clarity, and consistency). The best paper is not written for the first time, but has been revised several times before the submission. III. Format The paper should be double-spaced with footnotes (at the bottom of each page) and bibliography at the end. Figures can be inserted in the middle of text, or appear at the end, but either way, number them consecutively======================? IV. Guideline. Basically, expand your Introduction into a full paper, following the exact same order. If your submitted draft of Introduction did not follow the template, revise it before you start to write the whole paper. Cover Page: Title and subtitle of your paper, author’s name, date, affiliation etc. Introduction (4-5 pages): Reflect comments you received and revise the Introduction. Follow the Introduction template. Research Question (1-2 pages) 1 After your Introduction paragraphs is Research Question or The Puzzle section. Here, expand the first paragraph in your Introduction (do not just repeat what you said in Introductionelaborate). This section can incorporate a figure or two, quick reference to numbers or anecdotes to illustrate your research question (e.g., increase in something, comparison with other countries). If there is a puzzle (deviation from expectation or commonly observed patterns), explain why it is puzzling. Then discuss why the question is important. Conventional Wisdom or Debates (3 pages)?Expand the one paragraph literature review in Introduction to around 3-4 page literature review. The format should be similar (contrasting views or approaches), but this should be more detailed and precise discussion of each approach/scholarly work (e.g., what are cases, time periods, and data they looked at? Is evidence weak or strong?) and your critiques of the literature (what’s missing?). Dont forget to cite (Author, Year). Cite scholarly works, and cite journalists views only when necessary. Argument and Contribution (2-3 pages)?Expand the one paragraph argument section in Introduction here. Spend more space discussing (1) the logic of your argument step by step, (2) how your argument/papers empirical scope differs from existing studies, and (3) your contribution. Methodology (1-2 pages)?Expand the one paragraph in Introduction. If you compiled new data, state the scope of this new data & sources (e.g. country/region/year, and sources of the data). If you rely on other scholars works or surveys, state the sources and how you use them. If you gather non-numerical information (e.g. govt documents, newspaper articles, etc), discuss sources and what you aimed to find through these sources. Also discuss whether you have refuted alternative hypotheses and what evidence suggests so. Just like conference presentations, visual aids (graphs, charts and figures) are great. Dont just throw them in the paper, thoughyou will need to explain these figures in detail in text, and also remember to cite sources at the bottom of each figure. Rules about Figures and Tables: Figures and Tables have to make sense to readers without reading main text, and your explanations of tables and figures in main texts should make sense without looking at tables and figures. At the bottom of any table or figure, you need to have source information: e.g., Source: World Bank, World Development Indicators, Various Years. Conclusion and Broader implications (2 pages)? In light of the finding section completed, discuss broader implications of your research. 2 If you want to discuss any normative assessment (e.g., a government should do this and that) or future (you dont need to), this is the section to do so.
