Practice Question: How can you ensure of a healthy development for youth within U.S. military families?
PART 1. PRACTICE QUESTION 1. Introduction a. Briefly state the Practice Question that is being addressed in this Research Brief this question should ideally be related to the effectiveness or impact of an intervention or program; please be sure that the intervention or interventions are those in which social workers have the predominate role – i.e. it is a social work intervention and one that would require a professional social worker to implement b. Briefly describe the problem and the population affected; i.e. the scope and impact of this issue; discuss any relevant cultural and contextual factors that might impact the issue. Be sure to use scholarly references and statistics, not personal observations or experiences. c. Why is it important that social workers working with this problem have this information?
PART 2.
EVIDENCE SEARCH SUMMARY 1. Approach to the Search a. Write a brief description of approach you used to search the professional literature. Description should include the following: databases used and search terms used; evidence hierarchy used to guide the search; criteria used to determine which sources would be reviewed and used in the brief. 2. Results of the Search a. Provide a brief description of the results of the search of the professional literature. Description should include the following: approximate number of total and useful ‘hits’ (sources) yielded by the search; approximate number of publications reviewed; approximate number, and type and source of empirical research studies reviewed. b. Describe any limitations of the approach to the search and implications — for example, not enough recent articles; very few empirical articles; not a lot information related to social work interventions; etc.
PART 3.
CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE EVIDENCE AND STATE OF THE KNOWLEDGE BASE 1. Quality of the Evidence – Appraise and summarize the quality of the evidence you read to answer your Practice Question. In your summary include the following: a. Methodological strengths and weaknesses of the studies providing evidence in terms of the measurement, sampling, and design methods used in the studies; be sure to include some detailed assessments of the relevant methodological issues such as reliability and validity of measurement, external validity, internal validity, etc. for at least three of the studies reviewed. b. Strength of the Evidence Overall – Referring to the Evidence Hierarchies you read about and discussed in class, describe how you would characterize the overall strength of the body evidence you located and reviewed. This discussion should not be about the articles individually, but about the strength of the collective body of literature. c. Caution- this section should not be based on a description of the content of the articles (i.e. the description of the study and the outcomes); it should be about the methods of inquiry. The content should be included in #2 below. 2. Answer to the Practice Question as Suggested by the Evidence – Provide a summary of what the evidence suggest is the answer to the practice based question. a. Based on the literature and information you gathered, what is “the answer” to the Practice Question based on the best available information? Please note that the evidence might have suggested there is not a clear, definitive answer, but what does “most” of the literature suggest? b. Describe the outcomes and results that provide the best information that would inform practitioners working on interventions and programs to address this Grand Challenge. c. Overall, describe how well did the evidence answer the practice question, given the strength and quality of the evidence, as well as the direct relevance of the evidence in terms of your specific practice problem, population and question addressed by this brief
PART 4.
TRANSLATING EVIDENCE INTO PRACTICE 1. Practice Decision and Action Supported by the Evidence – Provide an action plan for the agency a. Based on the literature you read and the answer to the Practice Question, what are the implications for the agency? What action steps should the agency take? b. How might this evidence be integrated into the practice experience of the agency professionals and other working with this problem area or population? c. What are the implications of the limitations of the search and appraisal of evidence, as well as limitations due to the quality of evidence? Are there any barriers that you might anticipate in applying the actions suggested by the evidence and what are some strategies might you use to overcome these barriers?
