YES 💤 🚫 Here’s what you need to know: Wearing contacts overnight reduces oxygen at the cornea & can raise the risk of developing corneal infections or ulcers 👾 It’s best to take them out before going to sleep, clean & store them safely, so you can enjoy clear vision for longer.
Here’s why: The cornea, (or landing pad for contact lenses), doesn’t have blood vessels making it clear. The cornea receives a large portion of the necessary oxygen & nutrients from the tear film, AKA the little tiny layer of water on the surface of the eye. This is why eye doctors make such a big to-do about the “fit” of the contact lens. Ideally, we want the contact lens to very slightly skate around on the surface of the eye ⛸ kind of like an air hockey puck. That means there’s enough of a tear film layer between it and the cornea for the cornea to continue to get its oxygen & nutrients.
Ok so what if the contact lens fit it too fit or if I fall asleep in my contact lenses? 💤 Suffocation. If the contact lens is too tight or if you close your eyes with your contact lenses on for too long, there is not enough tear film, AKA not enough oxygen, getting to the cornea. When this happens, the cornea swells.
Do I care if my cornea swells? Definitely. Your cornea is the barrier between the inside world and the outside world. 🚧 When your cornea swells, the wall that prevents pathogens from entering gets openings in them. This is primetime for creepy-crawlies such as AMOEBA (very large, mega gross pathogen. Look up “acanthamoeba keratitis”‼️) to crawl into your cornea and wreak havoc. (This ends with the best case scenario being mild scarring) ☣️
