Review the case study provided, and assume the role of a counselor who is assisting with a prevention program at a local college. Penelope attended your prevention program session at the college and has approached you for service. You now need to create an early intervention plan for treatment for Penelope. You will also document notes as the counselor regarding potential ethical issues that may arise with the case. 2 Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed: I. Early Intervention Plan: To complete this section, you will create an early intervention plan for the client. The client will be able to review this plan to make informed decisions about resources available. A. Provide a brief summary of the clients case. What are some of the presenting issues you see with the potential clients current substance use? B. What treatment resources would you refer the client to? Explain your reasoning using the continuum of care. C. Explain family and/or community resources that would be appropriate for this client at this time. Justify your choice of resources. II. Counselors Notes: To complete this section, you will create a separate document from your early intervention plan to serve as counselors notes. These notes would not be available to the client. A. Explain some key considerations you would have in meeting the needs of this individual if she became a client. Questions to consider: What are the cultural factors involved? Do any potential ethical issues stand out? Cultural Factors Identification of Cultural Factors Affecting the Client in This Scenario In the case of Penelope, a number of cultural factors are at play. First, there is the issue of heredity. Secondly, there is the environment. Thirdly, they include socio-economic conditions such as income and education. Finally, there is the issue of race (Native American). Explanation of How These Cultural Factors Affect the Service and Treatment Recommendations for Penelope In regards to heredity, Penelope believes that her substance abuse problems may have originated or inherited from her father who drinks all night and falls asleep. As a result, she harbors the idea that the service and treatment recommended to her may not be effective and instead opts for heroine. In addition, Penelopes external/social environment is made up of friends who pre-game, go out to bars using their fake IDs and drink heavily. With such a group of friends, Penelopes mind will be fixated on drugs/pills and alcohol for pleasure and relieve stress and disregard the effectiveness of service and treatment recommendations offered. Also, taking the five classes and working part-time means that Penelope cannot find time for the service and treatment recommended. Even if she would, the money may not be enough for all the recommended services and treatment. On the element of race, Penelope is aware of the theory that being a Native American means that she was more likely to have a drinking problem. Discussion of How the Early Intervention Plan Would Be Different For a Client with a Different Cultural Background A different cultural background means a difference in beliefs. Like in the case of Penelope, her toxic external environment (friends) and unsupportive family, has played a key role in her addiction. Hence, the recommended intervention plans fit her cultural needs. However, for a person from different culture, the early intervention plan will definitely depend on the underlying cultural reasons and perceptions. For instance, a person with similar problems to Penelopes but different culture will have a different perception towards the recommended treatment and response to a particular therapy (Anthamatten & Hazen, 2012). Therefore, after familiarizing with the clients condition and cultural values and perceptions, a counselor or therapist would recommend an intervention plan that factors or matches with the cultural needs of the patient and the family as well. ?
