Research and investigate individuals/groups that started a movement on any social or political issue.
Before you do the assignment, please read the following reading to help. Norms can be well-established rules that have stood the test of time and have come from thoughtful consideration of what reflects the values, beliefs, and conduct of society. Or they are sometimes practices that have evolved with no particular end result in mind. Sometimes these types of norms are established because of peer pressure, keeping up with the Jones, the desire for acceptance or deviance. Have you taken a look around your school or the popular hang out places and seen most girls wearing pants and shirts that expose their belly? Is this the norm in your school? What if your grandma started wearing these clothes? How long will this norm last? Suppose, on the other hand, you felt that this was the exploitation of women and wanted to change the norm. How would you go about doing this? Would you be considered the deviant in your school because you did not conform to the established trends of the day? You might even suggest that your school wear uniforms to control the social stratification that this type of norm can promote. For society at large or the society in which you are working, i.e. the school, to consider your idea for change they must: perceive the change as a reflection of their established beliefs and values. see benefits to themselves and to society. Because you would be trying to introduce a new way of behaving, or in this case dressing, you would be considered a deviant; you are deviating from the established norm. Being willing to put yourself on the line to establish better circumstances or conditions for the various societies that we live in is what Social Reform is all about. The norm that you will be identifying at this point should be one that needs changing and that you have a vested interest in. This will make it easier to follow through with your plans.
