2000 word (+/- 10%) Essay LO2: Compare and contrast a variety of research methodologies and other approaches that underpin evidence-based practice. Formative and Essay Your essay is a critical review which is a systematic examination of the strengths and weaknesses of the way in which the researchers have designed and conducted the work across all 2 papers. You will need to briefly describe what the researchers have done AND then go on to say whether the approaches can be said to be consistent with the intentions of the researchers, AND if it was more or less informative in comparison with the other study you have chosen for review. You need to contrast what was done in the articles with what theorists tell you are good practices within work of their type/design, or use that theory to confirm good practice was followed. LO3: Critically evaluate research evidence related to your field of practice – Essay You should ultimately be able to provide a reasoned suggestion as to so what the evidence can help you understand in relation to the area of practice you are discussing. In this section you need to summarise the limitations and strengths of the type of evidence that you have reviewed, and consider what questions the evidence does answer in relation to the area of practice, and what is left less well understood. You will need to tell us how you made that judgement. Guidance on how to construct your essay to meet the LOs Introduction; (usually no more than 10% of your word allowance) This should include a brief discussion of the search strategy (summary of questions 1-8/appendix 1). Then state your intention to critically evaluate/critique, the articles that you have selected to include in your data extraction table, and suggest why this is an important skill to acquire and demonstrate within nursing. You may wish to include consideration of what makes a meaningful critical review/critique. You should also include here any framework/s, or system of critique described by a relevant author that you intend to use to undertake your critique, reference it, and tell the reader why it is appropriate to use. Main body; In this section you must write in a critical style; therefore, you must be able to identify key strengths and weaknesses of the 2 research articles that you have included in your data extraction table, and discuss implications for practice and/or further enquiry. A suggested way of organising this essay may be to consider using the headings in the data extraction table; Aim/Purpose and Design of study Methods of data collection used, Population/Sample and Ethical considerations (not listed in the table) Data analysis and Findings LO3: Critically evaluate research evidence related to your field of practice – Essay Conclusion; (usually around 10 20% of your word allowance) Conclude with considerations as to how the articles reviewed contribute to your understanding of the aspect of practice you were interested in (are the papers in agreement despite different designs and purposes? Do the papers leave you with some questions answered in part but with areas as yet to explore further? Would you use a different search strategy next time or did the one you used obtain what you needed/wanted?
