Cultural Relativism

Marvin and Marla have been married for 20 years. Even though they wanted to have children, they were not able to do so. This, however, has not gotten in the way of them living a fulfilling life. For about ten years now, the American couple has been welcoming foreign exchange students into their home. Each year, they host a new student from a different part of the world. This year, they are going to be the proud host parents to Chadni, a foreign exchange student from India. They are particularly excited about her arrival because they have never had the opportunity to host anyone from India. To demonstrate their enthusiasm, Marla decides to have a cook out. She wants Chadni to learn about and appreciate the American culture so she decides to prepare traditional American food like hot dogs and hamburgers. Chadni finally arrives at their home. After a warm greeting, Marla asks Chadni if she is hungry. Chadni tells her that she is very hungry so Marla serves her a hamburger and a hot dog. To Marlas surprise, Chadni does not eat. After a couple of minutes, Chadni tells Marla that she cannot eat the food. Not only does she endorse a strict vegetarian diet, eating cow beef is considered a violation of her religious and cultural principles. Marla insists that she should eat just this once.
