Advertising and Social Change
2 Textual analysis – Analysing the cultural work/work of representation 500 words max You should choose 2 print/online ads (i.e. not videos) from the same product sector or 2 (comparable) charity ads or 2 (comparable) government/public information ads. These can be selected from any country so long as you translate any tag lines and all copy. You may also choose 2 ads from the work you did for your Group presentation but these should not be those the group actually discussed in your presentation. You may choose to devote more words to one ad than the other, but you need to think about how you can compare the two ads. Engage with one ad then the other (rather than trying to compare point by point). In analysing your ad(s) you should draw explicitly on at least one of the articles/ approaches introduced in Week 3 reading), but you may briefly also draw on any other reading you have done over the term. You should not read beyond core readings. You may wish to select a particular theme to pursue in analysing your ad(s). Indicate this in your opening sentence. But you do not need to use up words with a full introduction. Plunge straight in to your analysis. Do, however, include an end paragraph pulling out what you think is one or more key point to emerge from your analysis. Include good colour copies of your ads, making them large enough to easily read the copy. Provide sources for them, date and, if possible the media you located them within. You may also annotate on or around these ads if that would be helpful. List bibliography at end following the usual academic conventions. As long as you are consistent it does not matter which system you use, though we usual recommend the Harvard system. (Your weekly readings are listed in this way.) Bibliography and any annnotations on your ads are not included in the word count. Double space your work like this paragraph. Use a font size which is no less than 11 point but preferably 12 point (like here). Leave good margins (as in this document). This makes it easier for your tutors to mark and add comments to your script. Your tutor will discuss the details of this assessment further in seminars. Check SxD and Canvas for submission deadline and details.
