Discussion: Nurses’ Critical Role in the Success of EHRs As a nurse, you can be a key player in the development and use of information systems workflow. Changes in technology mean changes to workflow, and as we know, humans often do not like change. A new skill or workflow needs to be learned, and it takes time for the new workflow to be embraced as part of the normal workday. It is the nurse’s role to act as a supporter and a willing participant to help make the process as smooth as possible. Often, the implementation of new information systems or electronic health records (EHR) is met with resistance from nurses. Tools exist to assist in decreasing the resistance to change, allow a smoother transition, and provide nurses the opportunity to give appropriate feedback for system changes as needed.
