Assignment: THE PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT: “Choose an Issue, Pick a Side—Persuade Your Audience” As the title implies, this final writing assignment will be direct, explicit argumentation. There is no need to unnecessarily explain your topic (assume the reader is familiar already), just argue for whatever “side” you desire. Most important in this assignment is your authority as author, which is established through “ethos” and solid, commanding writing. You cannot argue something convincingly unless you are an authority. But just because your voice is paramount does not mean other voices are not; your opinion must be established and authorized through the support of outside sources. Every single one of your claims must be backed up by an authority on your topic. If you cannot find an authority to support a particular claim, then that claim must be dropped for another. You will have to make judgment calls as a reader of your own writing as to what sticks and what does not. Therefore, drafting and revision on this paper will be essential. I will be focusing on the careful use and legitimacy of sources within your paper—attribution, author credentials, and in-text citations are key. Your thesis or “controlling idea” will also be a key part of this final paper. The thesis is typically located at the end of your introduction. For this paper, I will also be focusing on the notion of “refutation/concession” and “bias.” You will, at some point, refute or concede to the alternative claim(s) for your argument—we will elaborate on this subject in class. You will also argue your points without seeming unnecessarily biased; that is, without using undue emotion, hyperbole, or logical fallacies in your paper. You must be a calm, collected, and logical arguing entity. These apps such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat have made rise for a dark period of mental health in both the younger and middle age persons of our communities. People are only showing their best moments, the highs and never the lows of their lives which in turn have convinced us that our real everyday lives are second best to our fantasy social media personas.
