Please from the file : Last week in class we discussed Marxism as an approach to the study of politics and international relations. Based on the readings and the lectures what do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of a Marxist approach to political analysis? How important do you think economics and class relations are in understanding domestic and/or global politics? One area of scholarship that has grown out of a Marxist approach is called dependency theory which looks at the way states on the ‘periphery’ of the international system (i.e. developing states) are kept in a subordinate position in relations to the ‘core’ or developed states. Wealthy states grow richer as their corporations are able to exploit the weak labour laws and low pay in the poorer states, entrenching inequality on a global scale. Do you think this is a useful lens to view world politics?
