describe a communication decision (appropriate for academic writing) that tested your sense of ethical communication
Ethical Autobiography Assignment This assignment asks you to begin framing your own approach to communication ethics and to define your perspectives. It is divided into three parts and uses material from your personal experience and from the readings/class discussions associated with Chapters 1, 2, and 3 in the textbook. Part 1 This I Believe Initially, write a one page statement about what you believe to be true about human communication and appropriate human interaction in the personal, professional, and civic spheres. You should first, offer your definition of communication. Second, you will articulate what you think it means to be a responsible communicator. In doing so, you should be making assertions about communication choice making and offering evidence to back up those statements. You may draw from personal experience, the text, or other sources to provide that evidence. Part 2 Creed of Ethical Communication This section should be modeled after the idea of an ethics credo (as reviewed in Chapter 2 of the text). The one page creed should be written in the form of a Preamble and set of Principles. Each of the statements elements of the credo should be specific and reasonably free of ambiguity. See pages 40-41 for an example of a Preamble and Principles. Part 3 Sources and Tests of Ethics This section of the assignment is a more narrative description of the sources and experiences that have shaped your perspectives and standards. The narrative should describe the significant influences in your life that have led you to take the stance you have articulated. Second, this section of the assignment should describe a communication decision (appropriate for academic writing) that tested your sense of ethical communication. Describe the situation, identify the communication decision and actions you made. Address the consequences of that choice and explain how the situation reinforced, challenged, or informed your perspectives about responsible communication. This section of the assignment should be one to two pages. The assignment will be graded on your ability to clearly and effectively express your ideas in writing and to support your assertions with appropriate evidence and reasoning.
