Discuss and address counterarguments that reasonable people would have to the authors argument.
For your first essay, analyze one of the articles listed below. First, summarize the entire article, including the main idea of each paragraph. Then, analyze the article and discuss the authors thesis statement or claim, the authors assumptions (see checklist on page 32 of the textbook), specific means of support (evidence and examples the author uses to support his or her point), the ways in which he or she addresses counterarguments, and assess the authors credibility. (To assess credibility, read the biographical notes at the beginning of each article and consider researching the potential bias on the part of each author by studying the publication in which the article appeared. You may Google the publication and try to infer what its point of view might be. Explain whether or not you find the argument effective and why or why not (see pages 42-43 for ideas on how to begin your own claim about the effectiveness of the argument). Refer to the author and title of the article in your introduction. Paragraph 1: Introduction: Introduce author, mention title, assess authors credibility, as well as possible bias. Paragraph 2: Summarize entire article and state the claims the author uses, indicating whether they are claims of fact, value, or policy, or a combination of types. Paragraph 3: State the warrants (defined for this essay as underlying assumptions that the author may have tried to convey and which you must infer for yourself_ and specific types of support. Discuss and address counterarguments that reasonable people would have to the authors argument. Paragraph 4: Assess the effectiveness of the argument and under what qualifying circumstances it could be valid. Paragraph 5:: Define the concept associated with the article, including synonyms, examples, and stipulative definitions. Paragraph 6: Conclusion, reflecting on the importance of this concept and the author’s claim of policy Based on an outline submitted by Connie Goulart and shared with her permission. https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-leadership/post/military-women-in-combat-why-making-it-official-matters/2012/05/25/gJQAOsRvpU_blog.html?utm_term=.5f3fd26af568 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. https://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/31/opinion/sunday/executions-should-be-televised.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. https://www.newsweek.com/being-green-ben-amp-jerrys-145581 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. https://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/04/opinion/for-environmental-balance-pick-up-a-rifle.html
