HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HIT) FEDERAL LAWS ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT THE EXCHANGE OF DATA FOR THE BETTERMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH.
April 28, 2019 Off All,
INSTRUCTION: There is not a question. However, you may respond to this post by taking a viewpoint on what the poster stated and expounding on this by adding value and or a different perspective. For example, you can discuss Health Information Technology (HIT) and WHAT & HOW federal laws encourage and support the exchange of data for the betterment of public health. Interoperability is essential to exchanging data through different systems. Systems need to be able to communicate with each other to be able to share, understand and translate the information to the user in an understandable way (HIMSS, 2019). In my prior facility, the emergency room had a system, the OB/NICU had another and our electronic medication administration system had yet another. They all had to recognized each other’s language in order to display the information to the next user/provider. If information was left off or corrupt, the program may not work at all, wrongly display, or leave out information entirely, potentially leading down a wrong treatment path. With Health Information Technology (HIT) federal laws encourage and support the exchange of data for the betterment of public health. Health departments depend on patient data for research, health promotion and disease prevention. Privacy laws, HIPAA usually requires the permission of the patient to share protected information but public health entities have received an exception (CDC, 2015). Facilities cannot forget the role of meeting meaningful use requirements while keeping information secure and usable. CDC. (2015). https://www.cdc.gov/phlp/docs/datasharing-laws.pdf HIMSS.
