ASSIGNMENT: Choose TWO ARTWORKS to write a compare and contrast paper. Review Chapters 1.1 through 1.10 for a discussion of the visual elements and principles of design. You might want to choose one work you like and one you are not sure about or choose two artworks with different styles or techniques. Analyze the works of art you have chosen and complete the attached form. You will need a pencil (no ink in the museum, please), this handout and you may want to bring your textbook. Once you have completed the handout, you will then COMPOSE A TWO-PAGE PAPER using the information you recorded along with other interesting elements from your visit. This is a very standard compare and contrast paper and it should include correct grammar and spelling. The paper should be in a MS Word document format (.docx or .doc) or Portable Document Format (.pdf). Questions the paper should answer: 1) Analyze and discuss the different ways the artists have used the visual elements such as color, contrast, balance etc. 2) How do you think the cultural and historical background of the artists might have influenced the way their work looks? 3) What conclusions can you reach about the artists time period and his or her views of their world? Some things you might want to consider: spirituality, politics, economics, race or ethnicity, gender or gender identity, ecological issues, materials and process. 4) Do the two works share any similar ideas, approaches to subject or use of materials? 5) What do you think the artists are trying to communicate in their work? I’ll upload the paintings I chose and I’ll also upload another assignment that should help with writing the paper. The paintings I chose are by Vincent Van Gogh and they are called “The Potato Eaters” and “The Good Samaritan” just in case you need to look up better pictures. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
