How does interdisciplinarity enliven questions of social justice and the common good at the university?

To complete the Proposal and Annotated Bibliography, choose (or craft) your question. The proposal should be a 600- to 900-word (or two- to three-page) formal statement that names – Your primary question – Your reasons for interest in this question (this may be very personal or more academic) – A tentative thesis statement or hypothesis you will test (this will likely change as you work through your research and paper) – A plan for your paper (this is not a formal outline but a discussion of the kind of research and evidence you plan to use; however, you may provide an outline if that is helpful to your process) Attached to this proposal, you will include an annotated bibliography. Properly format bibliographic entries for at least five library-based scholarly sources, at least one of them a book from the library. These sources should be legitimate, trustworthy, and academic. Following each entry, include a double-spaced summary of at least 100 words. You should also comment on how this source will be (or will not be) useful to your paper. As you develop a thesis that answers your research question, be sure that you have adequate evidence—from our course content and from your research—to support it. A note on sources: you may also wish to include popular or general sources—like magazine or newspaper articles, book reviews, blogs, government websites, textbooks, etc.—if these support your particular focus. However, these sources will be in addition to the required scholarly citations for your annotated bibliography and essay. You may also find that the sources you list in your annotated bibliography don’t make their way into your final paper—that’s fine, as long as other scholarly sources do. I highly recommend using the annotated bibliography format to keep track of all the research you undertake throughout the process. It is a helpful research strategy. Essay topics ( you can choose one from here or choose your own topic) – How can reading imaginative literature—fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction—cultivate our humanity? How can such reading strengthen, enrich, or challenge other disciplinary perspectives on the questions listed in our syllabus? Be sure to root your arguments in research of what others have said on this topic. – How does interdisciplinarity enliven questions of social justice and the common good at the university? Again, be sure to root your claims in research on this question but also provide examples of resonance and tension from our guest lectures this term and their various disciplinary perspectives. – Take up one of the course’s questions (for instance, “What might it mean to ‘cultivate humanity’?” or “Are humans by nature moral?”) to research from at least two disciplines’ perspectives, filling out, expanding, and perhaps challenging our guest lecturer’s presentation. Seek to answer the question in your thesis statement. – What can The Bluest Eye, The Break, or “The School Among the Ruins” teach us about one of our course’s primary questions? Your research for this topic will probably be a mix of literary criticism and research on the particular question. – Wild card: compose your own question, but note that it should follow the format of the suggested questions above, asking you to make connections among course lectures and readings and perform independent research in order to assert and support a particular stance. – What is it to be human? – What is “human nature”? , -What factors contribute to resilience? How can our understanding of resilience inform practices and policies aimed at enhancing human development? -What is human dignity? – overpopulation (Global issue) -Social construction of gender: understanding the race of Social Media – Ways in Which Gender Politics in Economic Globalization Impacted Women. – How do we work through conflict? -What are the causes and consequences of poverty?
