This short paper is essentially an applied case study. To complete this assignment, first identify a current international political or economic event. In the intro you should give a brief introduction or summary of key historical events that precipitated the event. This should be short, since its in the introduction and the onus is on you to identify the most salient and important parts of history to discuss. Second, select a theory from one of the assigned readings in the course. You will also have to give a brief explanation of the theory in the introduction of this paper. Third, explain how this theory is either supported by the event(case) you’ve selected or challenged by the event/case you’ve selected. An excellent paper will be able to suggest amendments to the theory based on the case/event analyzed, perhaps during the conclusion. Please Note: Make sure you have a thesis statement that appears as the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. You thesis should articulate the conclusion you’ve reached from your analysis, i.e. “this event challenges the tenets of xxx theory because xxx, xxx, xxx” or “this event provides strong evidence for the xxx theory because xxx, xxx, and xxx.” While you will not receive a bad grade for simply finding a case or event that illustrate or supports a certain theory and explaining why this is the case, I do think that the best work is going to use an event/case to critique an existing theory, as this is evidence of more advanced critical thinking and analysis.
