Term Paper Overview Students are required to work in groups on a term (research) paper. The paper should be on an Indigenous organization of their choice. The term paper for Admn 260 encourages students to apply associated theories of individual, team and organizational-level behaviour through an in-depth analysis of the organization they have chosen. The paper will require an interview with a manager/director or employee from the organization as well as detailed research on the individual, team and organizational processes within the organization. You will be asked to organize the paper into four different sections: Introduction Descriptive overview of the organization History (Why was the organization established? How did it come to be? What purpose did the organization serve when it first opened? How has its purpose evolved over the years?) Identify and discuss key organizational values and mission statement Public Image (Corporate Social Responsibility, Organizational/Corporate Identity, Public Positioning) Motivation, Performance, and Processes [Individual Level] How does the organization foster values congruence and positive emotions? How does the organization build affective commitment? What types of supports does the organization provide to help employees cope with stress and to increase overall well-being and job satisfaction? How do the organizations managers/directors approach the management practice of motivating employees? Explore the link between motivation and performance from the organizations point of view. Team Processes What types of team structures and processes (e.g. communication channels) are used? How are teams utilized to meet planned organizational outcomes? How does the organization perceive the benefit of these teams and processes? What are the challenges when using teams and groups in the organization? How does the organization overcome these challenges? Organizational Processes Organizational Structure: What type of structure is in place (tall vs. flat; centralized vs. decentralized; mechanistic vs. organic)? What forms of departmentalization exist (simple, functional, divisional, etc.)? Is there a high degree of formalization? Large or small organizational size? Organizational Culture: What type of organizational culture (shared values and assumptions) does your organization try to promote? How is this organizational culture expressed through organizational artifacts (language, stories, rituals/ceremonies, structures and symbols) that exist within your organization? Organizational Change: What types of change has your organization had to undergo since it first opened? What have been the driving and restraining forces of change? What approaches to change did the leadership encourage? How did the leadership communicate the change process to the organization? Conclusion Please provide a brief analysis of your findings in sections I, II, III and IV. What are the key strengths and challenges that exist at the individual, team and organizational levels within the organization? What suggestions would you make to strengthen the organization at all three levels and why? Students are expected to set up an interview, either in person or over the phone, with a manager/director or employee from the organization.
