Essay #2 – Metamorphosis, “A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner” OR “The Veldt, by Ray Bradbury” 4-5 pages
Choose ONE of the following prompts to address in your essay. Remember, you DO NOT have to answer every single question within the prompt – the questions are there to help instigate thinking about the topic. You need to choose one of 2 mentioned poems. You need to choose one of the 3 mentioned below points. So the assignment should be based fully on only 1 of the points, not all 3 of them. 1.In describing his use of the uncanny, director Jordan Peele explains that: “The fear of the doppelganger is really the fear of self – the fear of that which we suppress as individuals. What is the shadow version of ourselves?” If you take out the word doppelganger and add in any element of the uncanny, how do the texts we’ve read interrogate this idea of the fear? What do we learn from our experience with these texts? What do they tell us about the human condition? How does this experience with fear augment our understanding of the world? 2.How is the Gothic/uncanny used in select narratives to make a statement about a significant real life issue? How is the Gothic/uncanny used for efficacy? In what ways can the reader’s interaction with the text influence their reading of the real-life issue? How does compassion influence your interpretation of the issue? What are the repercussions of an indifferent reading? 3.Explore the significance of place in any of our narratives. Explore its significance in relationship to plot, character, etc. If the location and plot are in opposition, explore the meaning of the dissonance. How do the select places influence our reading of the narrative? Can the place be considered something that fosters dysfunction? Trauma? What does the yoking together of place and the uncanny tell us about our relationship to the world? Response Format: Analytical responses should be double spaced, typed, no larger than 12-point font.
