Journal Entry You need to reflect on the topics you have studied and how you will be able to apply them to your personal and/or professional life. You can also post reflections into the journal from the various lecturecast activities throughout the module. Write a short (approx 200-300 words) Journal Entry to explain: o The key things you learned during the last two weeks o How can they relate to the workplace? o How they can aid your personal and professional development? o Remember to be specific and give examples In unit 1 we will define and discuss what is meant by management theory and management practice, as well as defining the central terms of managing and organizations and about life as individuals within organisations. Broadly the unit argues whilst management tools and techniques assist in the efficiency of an organisation it is ‘people’ who manage. A core concept throughout the text is the notion of sensemaking and its role in management theory and practice. In this unit we explore sensemaking as the connection between the activity of managing to the practices and processes of the organisation. Key topics of study: o The meanings behind the words managing and organisation o The relation between managing and organisation o The ‘difficulty’ of ‘managing well’ and why individuals and groups within organisations can be a challenge to manage o The impact that changes in the contemporary world are having on managing o Traditional conceptions of organisation and management encompassing issues of identity, hierarchy, and rationality
