MARGINALIZED GROUPS IN THE REALMS OF HOME, FAMILY, CAREER, BEAUTY, HEALTH, AND TRAVEL

A marginalized group, as we know, refers to the notion that a group of people exists on the fringes or outsides of a more dominant group whose needs, wants, and experiences are generally held to a higher standard and appear to be more important to society. Members of marginalized groups often struggle against social and cultural norms for equal or equitable access to power and respect. In an 8-10 page research essay, explore a specific problem affecting a marginalized group in the realms of home, family, career, beauty, health, and travel and propose or explain a re/solution for this issue. Remember, you are free to interpret these topics broadly, as we have discussed in class. However, be sure to narrow the focus of your essay to a specific marginalized group (or intersection of marginalized identities) and specific issue(s). An appropriate thesis statement will present the marginalized group (or intersection of identities) and the problem(s) they face in regards to home, family, career, beauty, health, and travel. Body Paragraphs should define the group/intersection for the reader and describe the problem and re/solution. Information Literacy Requirement- Use at least 5 sources as support. You may use any of our readings, as well. In an effort to extend as much compassion and humanity to your chosen group and issue, please do your due diligence while researching. Though it is easy to simplify or generalize, be as specific as you can with your language. Look for a variety of appropriate, relevant, and substantial information regarding these groups and issues, including scholarly studies, personal stories, news articles, etc. Things to consider- Is this issue somehow heightened, exacerbated, obscured, or marginalized more when it intersects with another identity? What happens with this marginalized identity intersects with a level of privilege? Examples: Racial/Religious profiling of women wearing hijab, niqab, or other head coverings by TSA at the airport.
