Psychology and Music (research proposal): psychotherapy applied to professional musicians with mental illnesses
I would like to ask for help for the Literature Review section of my research proposal. I have attached the research question, introduction and rationale as an additional material so you can take a look at it. It is about the possible beneficial effects that Italian psychiatrist’s Massimo Fagioli’s therapeutic treatment can have on young musicians (20-30 years old). Please consider only academic sources as references. Here is the assessment request: Literature Review Using the three conceptual themes that shape the question (as identified in the Introduction), offer a critique of what is known about the research question, accommodating current discourse, schools of thought, key studies / authors, and the stance adopted. Please consider the following as conceptual themes: 1) The current application of music therapy principles to mental illnesses: fundamental academic concepts; empirical results obtained. Whether music therapy was demonstrated to provoke and maintain health improvements in individuals (not necessarily musicians) with significant psychic problems. Whether it is true that music can cure the psyche, or instead it should be accepted that the psyche has to be cured first in order to improve life standards as well as artistic manifestations in individuals. 2) Currently existing support methods/institutions/schools of thought destined specifically to musicians who suffer from mental deseases. Reference points for musicians with mental health problems, whether they exist and whether thay are functional. Their level of diffusion, accessibility and reliability demonstrated through past episodes or case studies. (The third theme, which I will carry out by myself, is about the theorical and practical innovations brought about by Massimo Fagioli’s Birth Theory). The implicit argument underlying the study is that a valid method for the cure of musicians’ mental desease is lacking in today’s established medical and psychiatric practises. Therefore, the collection of data describing the effectiveness of Fagioli’s theory is needed to be interpreted by the scientific community as revolutionary.
