Scientism is the theory that truth and facts can be measured and does not take the spiritual land into play (Shelly & Miller, 2006). This means that things that cannot be felt, measured, or seen are not real. Some people view this as how the field of medicine is based.

Postmodern worldview “often assume that the world is made up of energy that can be manipulated and controlled. Although this energy is claimed to be nonreligious, in practice it frequently becomes “channeling” or manipulation of spirits” (Shelly & Miller, 2006, p. 37).

I think there is tension between these two theories because it’s hard to just rely on religion and spiritual practices which some cultures/religions do. Scientism just seems more practical when dealing with medicine. This does not mean I think people shouldn’t believe in something or pray in a time of need. This means, we should work harder to combine these two which for the most part we are doing.  Now days we are providing holistic care, giving the patient the religious and culture support they need as well as all facts and information they need to make the best decisions for themselves even if that decision is one we would not make. There are so many different cultures and religions.
