The development of modern Indonesian literature from Bali
This paper is meant to examine the major subject matter used by Balinese writers in response to the ever present social, cultural and political changes throughout the twentieth century. It focuses on the ideas of modernity and identity and how that these two ideas occur across the whole body of work in all genres – poetry, short stories, novels and drama, since making choices about tradition, culture and religion is always part of the Balinese way of mediating and negotiating regional identity.
