what does it actually mean to be a man?
MANHOOD, MASCULINITY AND HEALTH
September 10, 2019 Off All,
“Be a Man!” If you have walked this earth long enough, this is likely a phrase that has been directed at you at one time or another. But what does it actually mean to be a man? Do you have to walk like a man? Talk like a man? In this assignment, you will be tasked with providing definitions of manhood and masculinity – both formally and informally. That is, you should use the textbook, notes and other academic sources to define these terms; you should then tailor the definitions to fit your own constructs of manhood and masculinity. Lastly, explain how these definitions might inform your own health outcomes (for better or for worse). For example, consider what exercise, participation in sports and physical fitness mean to you as a man. Consider what your image of “ideal physical condition” is and assess whether it healthy from the standpoints of both physical AND mental health. Consider how masculinity contributes to the strength and/or quality of your interpersonal relationships, both romantic and non-romantic. Ponder whether the expectations of you being a man make it easier or more difficult to engage in self-care and to seek care externally when you may need it. Lastly, consider occasions and/or scenarios where you sense of manhood has felt threatened. Toward that end, consider whether the sense of threat still exists or has your thinking changed. Your essay must be no less than 1500 words; however, the goal is QUALITY NOT QUANTITY so be thoughtful yet succinct. Feel free to message me if you need assistance. Good luck!
