Find a scholarly text—journal/magazine article from a database or a chapter/ section from a book—related to your field of study/interest. The text should focus on a topic of interest in your field, perhaps an issue or argument related to that field. Read thoroughly and write an analysis to demonstrate how the article connects with the concept of the rhetorical context: author, audience, topic, and purpose. You will need an introduction that introduces and summarizes the text as well as a conclusion that evaluates the effectiveness of the text.
Use MLA or APA, depending on your field of study/interest. Your analysis should be about 2-3 pages in length and use formal academic language. You will have six (6) paragraphs. Use this outline to structure your paper.

You are looking for scholarly articles from which you can quote or paraphrase in order to support what you want to say about that topic (your thesis statement). We’re looking to take an argumentative stance about an issue in your field of interest. You’ll need a total of five, but for now, focus on the shortest one.

Go to “OWL at Purdue” (Google it) to see examples of MLA and APA format. If your area is Humanities (Education, History, etc.), review MLA. If your area is Sciences (Criminology, Nursing, Psychology, etc.), review APA.
