What is the most appropriate way to balance strategic and humanitarian concerns in warfare?

There will be two discussion this week class.Discussion 1)Step 1: At the close of the war, Allied forces were on a strategic mission to defeat the Axis powers. They found themselves in humanitarian roles after coming upon the camps and seeing evidence of Nazi crimes. What is the most appropriate way to balance strategic and humanitarian concerns in warfare? I also agree that Britain’s attempt at appeasement showed how meek their political power was at the time. They could not really deal from a position of power. Once Hitler began to show his true colors, Britain and other Allied countries had to pull themselves together and show that they were taking a firm stance against him. The US eventually had to step up as well, even though they would have preferred to be outside the main conflict. Japan’s attack brought the US face to face with the war and pretty much left the US with little choice after their attack. In these ways the war was necessary and the cold war that followed also became necessary to deal with the new weapons that were developed. The atrocities they committed were done to demonstrate their superiority, divine right to rule over others and to accumulate power, land and resources. Despite being of equal importance, I believe that it is impossible to have a balance between strategic and humanitarian concerns in warfare. Wars, regardless of length, are terrible and destructive in nature. Death is guaranteed to make its presence known. Millions of lives were lost in World War II and millions more were affected at home by that loss of family members and friends. It almost seems futile to even try to find a balance between strategic and humanitarian concerns. For example, if an Allied strategy called for a bombing mission on a large German city because it just so happened to be a major resource producer, there would be no way of determining where the residing German civilians would actually be at the time of the attack. While that mission would be a success if the conditions remained favorable, the fact that Allied forces could not guarantee German civilian safety might detract from the strategy’s effectiveness. In short, if Allied forces had tried to be more humanitarian, the effectiveness of their strategies might have been compromised and vice versa. There is no real winning solution to this problem. I know it sounds harsh, and it very well may be, but when a country goes to war they are not concerned with the humanitarian aspect until the cessation of hostilities are nearing or already occurred.
