MEDIA USE PHILOSOPHY

Description
This paper requires the use of first two assignments. I will upload them later for your reference. You can either check the attached requirements or read below. Requirements: What is the most effective use of your time while engaging a mobile phone media? Consider the following questions: • when, how, where, and under what conditions is the utility of a given media greatest for you? • when, how, where, and under what conditions is your use of that media greatest for others? (that is, does your media use contribute anything socially? if so, how and what?) In the Media Diary (assignment 2), we asked you to measure your media use and then to reflect and elaborate upon it. In this assignment, we’re asking the opposite: imagine a different relationship with your media and then enact it, that is, put it into practice over the course of 5 days. So the second part of your Media Use Philosophy consists of tracking your new media practice. Developing a minute by minute inventory is not necessary as it was in part 2, though it is a good idea to monitor the changes you made to your everyday practices through some form of note taking or chart/table design. When writing up your reflection on this process, be sure to communicate how to interpret your media practice. For instance, did you consciously decide against using it at a particular time of day when you traditionally used it (or vice versa)? Why? Finally, as part of reflecting on your practice, it’s important that you describe your successes and failures meeting the aims set out in your philosophy. Could you enact what you set out to do? Were your aims realistic? Were they beneficial? To whom? It could be that you believe your media use as it emerged in assignment 2 is already ideal, and that there are no changes required. First, ask yourself why that is the case (be sure this is a position you feel confident defending). Then design your philosophy as a defense of your existing practices, communicating that they are already ideal both for you and for others. It might be worth thinking about this paper (as it is all papers) in terms of sections. You’ll need an introduction that elaborates the direction of the paper (including both philosophy and everyday practice), a section elaborating your philosophy, a section on your practice, a section reflecting on your practice, and a conclusion. ——— In the Media Diary (part 2), you spent 5 days closely tracking your media use and reflecting upon it. Recall that the final prompt for the conclusion asked you to consider “what, if anything, would you change about your relationship as a result of what you found?”. The Media Use Philosophy (part 3) asks you to expand on on this idea by articulating and enacting a philosophy of media use. A philosophy is a broader, more abstract statement on a particular issue or topic. It is a thoughtful series of ideas based on some form of learning and knowing. The media use philosophy will be based upon your previous work (Assignments 1 & 2) and will communicate what you regard as a more productive, positive, and/or sustainable approach to your own media use. It effectively asks you to design your ideal relationship with the media in question. This doesn’t necessarily mean engaging with the given media for less time over the course of a day, week, etc. It also doesn’t necessarily mean engaging with it for more time.
