Essay #1 – Advertising and Food ChoicesAn important topic today involves efforts to curb worldwide obesity by encouraging advertisers to limit their messages about foods that are high in sodium, saturated fats and added sugars particularly to children. Currently, there is a new requirement that any restaurant chain that has over 20 locations must list calorie counts on all of the food they serve. In addition, there have been ballot initiatives in several large cities that have tried to prevent the sale of large sizes of sugary drinks to fight obesity. Public health advocates hail these attempts; whereas others argue that restrictions impose on our freedom to consume whatever we want.For the most part, advertising is a self-regulating industry.
