HEALTH COMMUNICATION
March 27, 2019 Off All,

You will be creating a SMART Communication Plan as the first step in their strategic plan. Your SMART objectives will be unique to your particular components for your group’s campaign. Try to find at least one source for each section of your SMART plan. We want to use the literature as much as possible, having a plan that is based in research is much more likely to be successful and use resources wisely. Please cite or footnote your sources in text, and provide an APA style reference page at the end of your document. If you are not familiar with APA format, see the PurdueOnlineWriting Lab (OWL) for detailed information on APA style. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ All of your sources should come from peer reviewed journals, or government documents or websites. motorized transport or human powered transport, is defined as any self-propelled mode of transportation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). Walking, biking, and operating a wheelchair all fall under the umbrella of active transport. Active transportation provides simple, affordable transport as well as physical fitness, making it a sensible option for most commuters. Physical inactivity is of particular concern for Americans, specifically those on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Specific Active transportation is important to everyone, but this public health strategy is geared towards students and faculty attending UMBC. UMBC’s student body consists of over 11,000 undergraduate students and over 2000 graduate students (UMBC, 2016). Out of those 13,000 students, about 10,000 are attending full-time and the other 3000 are part-time (UMBC, 2016). 16 percent of those students are African American, 20 percent of them are Asian American and six percent are Hispanic; the remaining 44 percent are Caucasian (UMBC, 2016). 7,495 of these students are male and 6,145 are female (UMBC, 2016). There are also about 500 full-time faculty members and about 250 part-time members working at UMBC (UMBC, 2016). Active transport is an important disease prevention strategy. It is associated with reduced rates of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure (Schauder & Foley, 2015). Chronic diseases—such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity—are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Physical activity prevents chronic diseases. To improve overall cardiovascular health, the American Heart Association recommends that individuals engage in moderate exercise for at least 150 minutes per week (American Heart Association, 2016). Unfortunately, recent reports suggest that less than half of adults 18 years of age and over meet the suggested physical activity requirement (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). To address this concern, UMBC should implement a mobile text-based health and wellness program that includes an active transportation component. Mobile Commons, an online mobile campaign platform, enables users to send and receive personalized text messages. The high rates of smartphone use among adults present a clear opportunity to enhance intervention strategies for improving active transportation among students and faculty. Previous work suggests that addressing health concerns through daily text-messaging is feasible and acceptable to adults (O’Brien & Palfai, 2016). Research has also shown that telehealth interventions have some promise for increasing active transportation among adults. Telehealth is the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance health-related education, public health and health administration (HealthIT, 2014). According to the literature, text messages are helpful, supportive, and they increase a sense of belonging to Universities (Boath, et al., 2016). Mobile Commons can be used to highlight the active transport opportunities around campus. The University has created walking trails, bike loan programs, transit options, and other active transport opportunities that students and faculty could utilize more fully. These active transport opportunities can be publicized and incentivized through the Mobile Commons phone application.
